DW: Germany to continue providing military assistance to Ukraine, Scholz pledges

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Germany would implement decisions enabling the country to keep up its military assistance to Ukraine, as per Deutsche Welle.

The chancellor emphasized that Russian leader Vladimir Putin must not reckon with any waning of German assistance.

The war in Ukraine “will probably not finish anytime soon,” Scholz stressed at a party conference of his center-left Social Democrats. Thus, it is important that Germany continued to be in a position “to keep supporting Ukraine in its fight to defend itself,” he added.

Scholz also said Germany had to be prepared to do more “when others are faltering,” apparently referring to political uncertainties in the US ahead of a presidential election in 2024.

On 8 December 2023, the German government had announced a new military aid package to Ukraine.

It had included 1,750 155-mm artillery shells, ten VECTOR reconnaissance drones, 100,000 first aid kits and medical supplies, and 70 MGW automatic grenade launchers.
