Germany provides new military aid package to Ukraine

The German defense budget for the following years increase from $6 bl to $11 bl, which would be used “primarily for military assistance to Ukraine.”

Germany provides new military aid package to Ukraine

On 20 October Germany announced about sending a new military aid package to Ukraine, the German Federal Government reported.

According to the statement, the package includes:

  • an additional three self-propelled anti-aircraft tanks Gepard (in addition to the already transferred 46),
  • three thousand 155mm smoke ammunition,
  • one Beaver bridgelayer tank,
  • 20 RQ-35 HEIDRUN reconnaissance drones,
  • 20 VECTOR reconnaissance drones,
  • 13 border protection vehicles,
  • three HX81 tractor trucks
  • three semi-trailers

The government also mentioned that the 2023 defense budget of €5.4 billion ($6 bl), along with additional approvals for subsequent years raising the amount to €10.5 billion ($11 bl), is intended to “be directed primarily toward military aid for Ukraine,” but will also help replenish stocks of the German army.

“These funds are to be used primarily for military assistance to Ukraine. At the same time, they will be used for re-filling Federal Armed Forces stocks for items delivered to Ukraine as well as for Germany’s contributions to the European Peace Facility (EPF),” said in the statement.

Previously, Berlin announced aid for electricity protection. On 13 October, The German government allocated a €76 million ($80 million) grant to Ukraine’s national power grid operator Ukrenergo to finance the protection of substations, new high-voltage equipment, and network upgrades along the border with Europe.
