Romania bolsters border defences against Russian drones

Romania will install a modern drone defence system on the border with Ukraine against attacks from Russia, HotNews.ro reported.

A new multi-state anti-drone technology, Romania will soon receive within NATO’s consent under an intergovernmental agreement with one of the partner countries, is the most effective anti-drone system in Europe. The new system will be deployed on the border with Ukraine following a series of incidents involving the crash of drone wreckage used by Russia to attack Ukraine’s south.

On October 18, Ukraine and Romania signed a Memorandum of Understanding to expand mutual military and technical cooperation between the two nations. Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu announced during the meeting in Kyiv that Romania and Ukraine will have “a new approach” to prevent Russian attacks on Ukraine’s strategic infrastructure on the border with Romania.

The Romanian Defence Ministry had previously concluded that the drones that had fallen on Romanian territory by accident were of Russian origin and hit by Ukraine’s air defense.

In September 2023, Romania was reportedly moving its air defense systems closer to its villages on the Danube bordering Ukraine due to incidents involving drone crashes.
