On the morning of August 9 at a checkpoint on the administrative border between mainland Ukraine and the Crimean peninsula, FSB representatives banned Ismet Yuksel and his family from returning to Crimea.
Renat Chubarov, leader of Tatar Mejlis announced this news on his Facebook page.
Chubarov wrote that around 7 am at a checkpoint on the administrative border between mainland Ukraine and the Crimean peninsula, FSB representatives banned Ismet Yuksel from returning to Crimea; Yuksel was returning home with his family (wife Hayana and daughter Dzhanike).
Yuksel told Chubarov that FSB representatives banned him for 5 years.
“Ismet refused to sign the notice, stating that it was illegal and that it violated his rights; he did not receive a copy of this document from the authorities. Currently Yuksel and his family are staying in a town in the Kherson Region near the administrative border with Crimea.” said Chubarov.
Ismet Yuksel is an ethnic Crimean Tatar, born in Türkiye in 1968. He returned to his homeland in 1995 and started a family in 1999. He has been a member of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people since October 2013. He has a 13-year-old daughter, Dzhanike, a high school student.
Yuksel is an active community leader in Crimea; he has contributed to the revival of the Crimean Tatar language and culture; he is also the initiator and leader of many humanitarian projects for children and young people that have been set up in Crimea with the help of the Crimean Tatar diaspora in Türkiye. Yuksel is advisor to the Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatars in Türkiye.
In July, the self-proclaimed Crimean “authorities” announced that Refat Chubarov, leader of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatars was banned from Crimea for 5 years.
In early May, the Kremlin-appointed Prosecutor of Crimea, Natalia Poklonska warned Mr. Chubarov about his alleged extremist activities.
In late April 2014, the leader of the Crimean Tatar people, Mustafa Dzhemilev was banned from entering Russia and Crimea until 2019.
Dzhemilev was handed the notice with regard to entry into Russia on the border between Crimea and Ukraine.
The authorities tried to keep him out of Crimea, but after hours of negotiations, he was allowed to enter the peninsula.
