Canada has moved against a Gulf company arming Russia. Ottawa has imposed sanctions on Streit Group, a UAE-based weapons manufacturer that supplies military equipment to Russia, Canada's Foreign Ministry announced.
The move closes a gap in an international net that has been years in the making. Ukraine sanctioned Streit Group in 2023, and the EU and Switzerland followed in 2025. Canada's action now aligns with those measures, part of a Western effort that has, since 2014, seen Canada alone sanction more than 3,500 individuals and entities complicit in violating Ukraine's sovereignty.
The company's vehicles are used by Russia's forces
Canada acted on evidence tying the firm to the war. Streit Group is a defense company that produces armored vehicles and other military equipment. Canada imposed the sanctions after receiving credible information that its armored vehicles are used by Russia's National Guard, which takes part in Russia's war against Ukraine, the diplomats announced.
"...Streit Group continues to feed Russia’s war machine and the Putin regime’s unprovoked and unjustifiable war against Ukraine," Canadian Foreign Ministry said.
The sanctions target the supply of military technology
Canada framed the measure as degrading Russia's ability to wage war.
"The sanctions announced today will reduce Russia’s military capabilities in its war against Ukraine," the Canadian Foreign Ministry stressed.
One node in a coordinated campaign
The value of the Canadian action lies in the coordination behind it. By joining Ukraine, the EU, and Switzerland in sanctioning the same company, Canada closes another jurisdiction to Streit Group and signals to other would-be suppliers that arming Russia carries widening consequences.
Sanctions on a single manufacturer rarely stop a determined supplier on their own, but a company sanctioned across four jurisdictions faces shrinking room to operate, banking, and legitimacy. The measure is one strand of the years-long Western effort to make supplying Russia's war costly enough to deter, tightening around the networks that keep Russian forces equipped.
