Ukrainian forces struck the Ilsky oil refinery in Russia's Krasnodar Krai overnight and damaged a Pantsir-S1 air defense system in the same operation, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed on 2 June.
The strike ignited a fire at one of the largest oil refineries in southern Russia, which has a processing capacity of about 6.6 million tons of crude per year. The plant produces petroleum products used to supply Russia's armed forces, aided in part by its proximity to Black Sea ports, the General Staff said.
Krasnodar authorities confirm overnight fire
The Operational Headquarters of Krasnodar Krai earlier reported that drones had struck the facility in the settlement of Ilsky, sparking a fire on its grounds. No casualties were reported. Telegram channels circulated accounts of the attack hours before the regional and military confirmations.
Ilsky has been targeted repeatedly during Russia's war on Ukraine. Ukrainian defense officials have previously described the refinery as part of Russia's military-industrial complex, citing its role in receiving, storing, and processing hydrocarbon feedstock and shipping finished products by road and rail.
Pantsir system and other targets struck
In addition to the refinery, Ukrainian drones damaged a Russian Pantsir-S1 anti-aircraft missile and gun system, the General Staff said. Other confirmed targets from the overnight operation included a drone warehouse in Russian-occupied Donetsk Oblast, drone command-and-control points in Russia's Belgorod Oblast, and a concentration of Russian personnel in the Donetsk direction.
Separately, a mill plant identified as "Melzavod EGA" was struck in the settlement of Alekseyevka in Russia's Belgorod Oblast, according to local reports.
General Staff updates 31 May refinery strikes
The General Staff also revised damage assessments from strikes 2 days earlier. Ukrainian Neptune missiles hit the Novoshakhtinsky refinery in Russia's Rostov Oblast on 31 May, with 2 primary crude distillation units—AVT-1 and AVT-2—confirmed damaged.
A separate strike on the Saratov refinery the same day damaged the AVT-6 primary distillation unit, the General Staff said. The General Staff did not specify the number of drones or other munitions used in the overnight Ilsky operation.
