Ukraine launches its first AI war lab—next-generation Defense Center of Excellence “A1” backed by UK

Kyiv is opening a new AI Defense Center "A1", which the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense reports it is implementing with the support of the UK government. Soon, more such labs will be established in the country, focusing on military technology competence to accelerate the integration of artificial intelligence into warfare.

Artificial intelligence is changing the concept of defense and allows for the rapid transformation of combat data into technological solutions. Such centers also demonstrate the potential of modern technologies for NATO allies.

Intelligence of the future: frontline data becomes a weapon

According to Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, the main tasks of the center include:

  • Analysis of combat data
  • Predicting enemy actions
  • Development of autonomous systems
  • New command and control tools

The center will help transform combat experience and frontline data into technological solutions more quickly and accelerate the implementation of innovations within the armed forces.

Every aspect of warfare under AI control

Soon, a dedicated center will appear for each key domain of modern warfare: drones, Middle Strike, Deep Strike, artillery, and others.

“AI solutions will become part of every domain of modern warfare, from intelligence to command. Our task is to create the most effective defense system in Europe,” emphasizes Fedorov.

This is an AI-driven next-generation army, built on innovation speed, autonomous systems, and network advantage, he adds.

Earlier, an international naval group led by Ukraine, acting as the opposing force, conditionally “sank” at least one allied frigate. Vulnerabilities in NATO naval forces have been exposed during the REPMUS/Dynamic Messenger 2025 drills.

According to participants in the exercises held off the coast of Portugal, five scenarios were practiced, including port protection, convoy escort, and attacks on those convoys. In every scenario, the “red team,” led by Ukrainians, defeated the “blue team,” representing NATO naval forces.

For the attacks, Ukrainian MAGURA V7 maritime drones were used, high-speed unmanned boats capable of conducting reconnaissance and attacking ships with onboard weapons.
