Elina Svitolina advanced to the quarterfinals at Indian Wells WTA 1000 after Karolina Siniakova retired mid-match on the night of March 11–12, extending the Ukrainian's perfect head-to-head record against the Czech player to 5–0.
Svitolina, seeded ninth, took the opening set 6–1 before Siniakova, ranked 44th, withdrew at 1–1 in the second set. The retirement marked the end of a contest that was largely one-sided from the start.
The win puts Svitolina into the last eight at Indian Wells for the third time, and marks her 26th quarterfinal appearance at the WTA 1000 level overall. She will now face second seed Iga Świątek — the former world number one from Poland — with the match scheduled for 23:30 Kyiv time on March 12, according to tournament scheduling.
A victory would take Svitolina to her 14th WTA 1000 semifinal.
The 31-year-old entered the draw in the second round, defeating Germany's Laura Siegemund (No. 55) before beating American Ashlyn Krueger (No. 82) in the third round. The run follows a strong February showing, in which Svitolina reached the final of the WTA 1000 event in Dubai before falling short of the title.
Elsewhere in the draw, compatriot Marta Kostyuk (No. 28) exited the tournament in the third round, losing to third seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in three sets.
