A year ago, Ukraine launched the “Drone Line”, a large-scale initiative to scale up the most effective unmanned systems units of the Ukrainian army, Defense Ministry reports. Now, the project operates more than 1,000 drone crews who systematically strike Russian targets related to its war.
The initiative has allocated $880 million, with the Netherlands contributing, allowing Ukraine to acquire FPV drones, ISR systems, and unmanned aerial bombers on a large scale.
Over 1,000 drone crews on the front
Military sources report that at the beginning of 2026, every third Russian soldier on the front faced UAV attacks.
The project’s goal creates zones where the Russian troops cannot move without taking losses, while Ukrainian units detect and destroy targets before they approach Ukrainian positions.
FPV and ISR boost frontline efficiency
The initiative began in March 2025 and quickly became one of the largest foreign mechanisms for direct funding of Ukraine’s defense-industrial complex in the UAV sector.
During the past winter, the Forces of Unmanned Systems eliminated approximately 30,000 Russian occupiers. These results demonstrate how systematic drone use transforms into a technological advantage and an effective tool for halting enemy advances.
From sporadic use to systematic advantage
The Ministry of Defense envisions expanding and scaling the “Drone Line” as a key condition for stopping Russia’s ground offensives. The project shows Ukraine’s shift from sporadic UAV use to a systematic approach, integrating drones as a core element of tactical operations and strategic planning.
Earlier, a major Ukrainian strike on the Novorossiysk Bay, 350-400 km behind the front line, hit an extraordinary range of targets in a single operation. The confirmed damage list: naval minesweeper Valentin Pikul hit, anti-submarine ship Yeysk seriously damaged, frigate Admiral Essen struck amidships with detonation of its PK-10 countermeasure launchers.
