Winter didn’t break Ukraine — but spring is no time to let guard down, as Russia prepares more missiles

Winter didn’t break Ukraine — but spring is no time to let guard down, as Russia prepares more missiles

The Russians plan to continue strikes against Ukraine in the spring, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claims. Recently, Russia has increased the number of ballistic missiles it launches at Ukraine each month.

In February, Moscow fired a record number of ballistic missiles at Ukraine — 121 missiles. Russia launched them amid US-initiated “peace talks” — yet another weapon of destruction used by Russia to force Kyiv’s capitulation.

To defend against ballistic missiles, Ukraine needs pressure on Russia and air defense assets — Patriot missile systems. The same systems are used by countries in the Middle East against Iranian strikes in the recently launched war.

The Ukrainian president stresses that Russian strikes will not stop and may even intensify in the spring.

“Intelligence provides relevant information. Therefore, everyone whose job is to protect Ukraine from strikes must stay focused in the spring as in the winter,” Zelenskyy emphasizes.

Modern air defense systems remain the key deterrent against ballistic attacks.

They wanted to turn winter into Ukraine’s destruction

According to the president, Russia sought to make this winter fatal for Ukraine — to destroy the energy sector, break the home front, and demoralize society. In just three winter months, Russia used more than 14,670 guided aerial bombs, 738 missiles, and nearly 19,000 attack drones.

“But Ukraine did not break. This winter, Ukraine repelled a large number of massive strikes, when a single attack involved dozens of missiles and hundreds of ‘Shaheds,’” Zelenskyy stresses.

One of the largest strikes occurred on 6 December, when the Russians used more than 700 aerial targets, including more than 50 missiles. The Ukrainian president thanked energy workers, emergency crews, the State Emergency Service, air defense troops, developers and manufacturers of interceptors, municipal services, and entrepreneurs who kept the country functioning under constant attacks.

The winter endured proved the resilience of the state, but new waves of ballistic and drone attacks could inflict greater damage on the economy and civilian security.

Without sustained pressure on Russia and without scaling up modern air defense assets, each new month of the war increases the risk of even more large-scale destruction.
