The German Defense Ministry plans to involve Ukrainian defenders in training Bundeswehr soldiers, reports Spiegel. Ukrainian troops with combat experience will teach their German counterparts drone operations and conduct of combat missions.
The integration of Ukraine’s practical military experience directly enhances the combat readiness of the Bundeswehr, adapting it to the realities of modern warfare: drones, electronic warfare, and massed strikes that Ukraine faces daily.
Frontline expertise: Ukraine is a key NATO instructor
Negotiations on the participation of Ukrainian soldiers in training have been ongoing since 2025. The plan is to integrate their combat experience into Germany’s military education institutions.
Ukrainian troops will share knowledge on:
- Conducting combat operations against the Russian army;
- Effective use of combat drones;
- Defense against mass attacks and operations under electronic warfare conditions.
German officers note that currently, no NATO army has combat experience comparable to Ukraine’s, and this knowledge needs to be fully utilized.
From front line to command post: benefits for NATO
The participation of Ukrainian soldiers will allow the German army to:
- Increase the effectiveness of infantry units;
- Gain hands-on skills with modern command and control systems;
- Integrate real combat experience into training programs.
Exact details on timing and training formats have not yet been published, but Ukrainian instructors are expected to arrive in Germany as soon as possible to begin Bundeswehr training.
This creates a unique opportunity for NATO to acquire knowledge that no other Alliance army currently possesses, gained over years of intense combat operations against Russia.
