Russia carried out its largest attack on Ukraine’s energy system so far this year overnight on 3 February, targeting power generation and distribution facilities across several regions, Ukraine’s largest private energy company DTEK reported.
The company said the strikes hit thermal power plants and combined heat and power stations that were operating in heating mode during extreme cold, causing widespread outages and forcing emergency measures in major cities.
Strikes hit multiple regions amid extreme cold
According to DTEK, Russian missiles and drones struck energy facilities in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Odesa Oblast. Several of the company’s thermal power stations sustained heavy damage, while thousands of civilians were left without electricity.
In Kyiv, parts of the left bank, including Dniprovskyi and Darnytskyi districts, were forced onto emergency outages. On the right bank, temporary electricity schedules were introduced due to limited supply.
“The energy system is operating with serious restrictions,” DTEK said, adding that crews are working to stabilize power in affected areas.
More than 500 missiles and drones launched overnight
The attack took place amid temperatures dropping below -20°C, increasing pressure on heating and electricity networks already weakened by months of repeated strikes.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia launched more than 70 missiles and around 450 attack drones overnight, targeting multiple regions. At least nine civilians were injured, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Ninth major attack on DTEK in four months
DTEK said this was the ninth major attack on its thermal power plants in the past four months. Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russian forces have attacked DTEK facilities more than 220 times, killing four energy workers and injuring dozens more.
Despite the damage, the company said emergency repairs are ongoing. “Energy workers are doing everything possible to restore power,” DTEK said.
