Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Friday that most elements of a US-Ukraine deal are in place following what he called a "really positive" meeting with President Donald Trump—but one major issue remains unresolved.
"The issue of Donbas is key," Zelenskyy told journalists during an online press conference.
The remarks came after Trump envoy Steve Witkoff said Thursday that only one issue remains to be resolved between Kyiv and Washington.
Security guarantees ready for signature
The core security guarantees agreement is finalized and awaiting Trump's decision on when and where to sign, Zelenskyy said.
"I am confident this is a historic document," he said, adding that ratification by both the US Congress and Ukraine's parliament will still be required.
Zelenskyy said he raised the issue of air defense during the meeting and expects the US to deliver. "When that result is in Ukraine, I will definitely say so," he said.
The "prosperity package"—a bundle of economic and reconstruction documents targeting $800 billion over a decade—remains unfinished. "We see the future with a positive result. More work is still needed," Zelenskyy said.
Donbas talks head to Abu Dhabi
Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov is leading negotiations in Abu Dhabi Friday and Saturday, where "the modalities as seen by the three sides will be addressed," Zelenskyy said.
The president said he spoke with Umerov overnight and again Friday morning. "He will give me signals at every stage of these talks or agreements," Zelenskyy said. "We will share this with you."
