Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has urged the International Atomic Energy Agency and leading global powers to intervene after intelligence services uncovered Russian plans to strike substations powering Ukraine's nuclear facilities.
"Moscow knows no limits in its genocidal goal to deprive Ukrainians of electricity in the freezing winter," Sybiha wrote on X, the social media platform.
Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate reported earlier on 17 January that Russia is considering attacks on substations serving Ukrainian nuclear power plants as leverage to force Kyiv into accepting unacceptable demands. The Foreign Minister said Ukraine is sharing this intelligence data with partners while warning of potentially catastrophic consequences.
"It is high time for the world, including the IAEA and major global powers that value nuclear safety, to speak up and issue clear warnings to Moscow and force it to abandon such reckless plans," Sybiha said.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, following a meeting with Intelligence Chief Oleh Ivashchenko, confirmed that Russia is preparing further strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, including facilities servicing nuclear stations.
The warning comes as Ukraine faces its another winter under large-scale Russian attacks on its power grid.
