Russian missile hits Black Sea port as Maltese vessel prepares cargo loading

Russian forces launched a ballistic missile attack on a Black Sea port pier where a civilian vessel under the Maltese flag was docked, according to Minister of Communities and Territories Development Oleksiy Kuleba.

One crew member was wounded in the strike and is currently receiving medical assistance, the minister reported.

"The ship was preparing to transport container cargo. As a result of the strike, three containers were damaged and an oil leak occurred. A boom barrier is being installed to contain the consequences," Kuleba added.

The minister characterized the incident as another act of Russian terror against civilian port infrastructure, international trade, and maritime safety.

The strike comes amid a sharp escalation in attacks on port facilities. In 2024, authorities recorded 36 attacks on port infrastructure. That figure jumped to 96 in 2025 — nearly tripling the previous year's total. The 2025 attacks damaged 325 port infrastructure objects, according to official data.
