Russian forces launched a massive drone assault on the night of 12 January, deploying 156 strike UAVs including Shahed, Gerbera, and other types—approximately 110 of them Shaheds, according to the Air Force Command.
As of 8:00 am, air defense systems destroyed or suppressed 135 Russian drones across the north, south, east, and center of the country, the Command reported. Sixteen strike UAVs hit 11 locations, with debris from downed drones falling at two additional sites. The air attack was countered by aviation, anti-aircraft missile forces, electronic warfare units, unmanned systems units, and mobile fire groups of Ukraine's Defense Forces. Several enemy UAVs remained in Ukrainian airspace as the attack continued.
Fire in Kyiv's Solomianskyi district
Kyiv Mayor's Office head Tymur Tkachenko reported in his Telegram channel that air defense forces worked in the capital during the night attack. "In Solomianskyi district, a fire in a non-residential building as a result of a UAV attack," Tkachenko wrote at 1:52 am. No information was available about whether the fire had been extinguished or about other consequences of the attack.
Infrastructure damage and power outages in Odesa
Russian forces struck Odesa on the night of 12 January, damaging civilian infrastructure and residential buildings, according to Odesa Military Administration head Serhiy Lysak. "As a result of the Russian attack, an infrastructure facility was damaged. Part of one district is without electricity. Preliminarily, two people were injured," Lysak stated.
One private residential building was destroyed, and four more sustained varying degrees of damage, the administration head reported. Emergency and utility services responded to the impact sites to eliminate consequences and restore essential services. City authorities urged residents to exercise caution and monitor official updates on the situation.
Rail service suspended in Zhytomyr Oblast
Ukrzaliznytsia temporarily limited railway connections in Zhytomyr Oblast due to consequences of night strikes on critical infrastructure objects, the company's press service announced. The company cited disruptions in the energy system and damage to railway infrastructure.
Two morning commuter trains between Olevsk and Korosten were canceled on 12 January: train №6480 Olevsk—Korosten, departure at 04:47, and train №6481 Korosten—Olevsk, departure at 09:48. "We ask passengers to treat the situation with understanding and check the current train schedule in advance," the press service stated. The carrier emphasized these restrictions are temporary and directly related to consequences of the strikes.
Earlier on 11 January, Russian forces attacked Ukrainian territory with drones. Russian forces also struck Vilniansk in Zaporizhzhia Oblast with drones on 11 January. In Rivne Oblast, Russian forces shelled communities in the north throughout the day, causing infrastructure damage.
