Putin calls Russia’s Paralympic flag restoration “our common great victory” amid war against Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has hailed the International Paralympic Committee's decision allowing athletes to compete under their national symbols at international events. He has called it a "victory," as per the Kremlin.

Russia has killed at least 644 Ukrainian sports members, injured 20, detained 20, and 13 are considered missing. At least 799 sports facilities have been affected by Russian strikes, with 180 completely destroyed.

At the 2026 Paralympics, the Russian flag will officially return to one of the world’s most prestigious tournaments.

Flag and anthem as political tools

The International Paralympic Committee's decision to permit Russian Paralympians to return to competitions under their national symbols has been welcomed in Russia. It has brought Moscow back from isolation, which has been used as a tool of propaganda to support its aggression against Ukraine.

“It is gratifying that today our Paralympians compete again at the world’s biggest events with our national symbols, flag, and anthem. I consider this our common great victory," said Putin.

Concessions by international organizations despite murder

The International Olympic Committee led the initial compromise by permitting Russians to compete in a neutral status.

Other associations followed:

  • The International Sambo Federation first allowed Russian juniors to compete under their national symbols, and then, in December 2025, extended this to adults.
  • A similar decision was made in judo, where Russia maintains strong lobbying influence.

Despite four years of Russian aggression against Ukraine and numerous crimes, international sports continue to take a path of concessions toward the aggressor state.
