Romania has officially joined a key US-coordinated military support mechanism for Ukraine, becoming part of a growing international bloc pledging direct financial contributions to Kyiv’s defense. The €50 million commitment, confirmed by Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and announced by Foreign Minister Oana Toiu, marks the country’s entry into the Priority Acquisition List for Ukraine’s Defense (PURL).
PURL allows NATO members to pool funds for buying US weapons for Ukraine. Allies commit funding individually or jointly, and NATO handles the logistics.
Romania joins PURL mechanism to support Ukraine
The Romanian government passed a decision allocating €50 million to the PURL initiative within the country’s 2025 defense budget ceiling. According to the Ministry, the PURL mechanism is not only a military logistics tool but also an essential foreign and security policy instrument for the US, particularly in line with the Trump administration’s push for fair burden-sharing among allies.
"Romania's contribution to PURL will support the achievement of a lasting peace in [Ukraine], by strengthening Ukraine's capabilities," Toiu wrote on X.
She added that through the efforts of US President Donald Trump, European leaders, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, recent dialogue in the United States generated new momentum toward achieving a just and lasting peace.
The Foreign Ministry emphasized that supporting Ukraine against persistent Russian aggression is itself a security measure. Romania is honoring its commitments, and NATO membership means investments, action, and certainty of a secure future for Romanians, the Ministry stated.
Recently, Australia and New Zealand have also joined the PURL initiative.
