“On your knees, please”: Foreign legion fighter says courtesy prevents casualties during captures

American volunteer Bruce Keller, who gained attention for videos showing him taking Russian soldiers prisoner while politely ordering them to kneel, has explained his approach was aimed at reducing tension and avoiding casualties, according to an interview with 24 Channel.

Keller, who served four years in the US Marine Corps, filled out an application on the Foreign Legion's website and traveled to Ukraine. After training with other foreign volunteers, he joined the 63rd Separate Mechanized Brigade.

Regarding the viral footage of him capturing occupiers, the American said he had done similar operations several times before and focused on minimizing risk of losses on both sides.

"And if I need to be polite with them to do that, give them a cigarette, I will do it, regardless of how it looks to someone," the serviceman added.

The prisoners were escorted to friendly positions, where a wounded Ukrainian was also present. From there, they were transferred further—the last time Keller saw them.

Keller also revealed he learned basic Ukrainian while stationed at positions with only Ukrainian soldiers. He explained this was important for everyone's survival and emphasized it was his responsibility since he works in Ukraine and with Ukrainians.

The American says he loves Ukraine and wants to remain in the country after the war, start a family, and learn more about its history, describing it as "simply amazing" to him.

Regarding his family, Keller shared they were not thrilled when they learned about his intention to fight in Ukraine, but eventually accepted it and are simply happy he stays alive.

Earlier, the 63rd Separate Mechanized Brigade released video showing Bruce and his comrades taking four Russians prisoner in the Serebryansky forestry.

"[Come] here, or I'll kill you. On your knees, please," the American says in the footage, then offers the Russians cigarettes and adds: "Bon appétit."
