Russia’s “Española” military brigade of football ultras and far-right militants announces dissolution

Russia’s 88th “Española” sabotage and reconnaissance brigade announced on Friday that it was dissolving “in its current form” and undergoing what its commanders called a “reboot.” The statement was posted on the unit’s official Telegram channel on 2 October, but gave no details about the restructuring.

“Española” has been one of Russia’s most visible irregular formations in eastern Ukraine, known both for its battlefield role and its extremist origins.

Formed largely from violent football ultras and far-right militants, the unit embraced aggressive propaganda from the outset.

In April 2025, its members openly declared that Ukrainian civilians were “legitimate targets” unless they cooperated with occupying forces - statements widely condemned as evidence of terrorist activity.

The brigade, part of Russia’s 1st Volunteer Corps, is notorious for its role in the battles for Chasiv Yar, Klishchiivka, and the capture of Avdiivka. Analysts say it suffered heavy losses during these operations, yet remained active in offensive actions around Donetsk Oblast.

Despite Friday’s announcement, the group’s current commander, Stanislav Orlov, told Russian media that the “Española” brand and its associated fan community would continue to exist, even if the 88th brigade itself was formally dissolved.
