US announces new military aid to Ukraine “in the coming days”

The Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin announced on 31 October that the United States will soon declare a new military assistance package for Ukraine.

Speaking at a press conference alongside US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and their South Korean counterparts, Austin addressed the presence of North Korean military personnel in Russia, which he said demonstrates “Putin’s desperation” and his intention to continue the war against Ukraine.

“On the president’s direction, the United States will continue to increase security assistance to Ukraine, as will our allies and partners in the Ukraine Defense Contact Group,” Austin said.

The defense secretary specified that the aid would include “artillery, air defense, armored vehicles, ammunition, and other critical weapons,” with the announcement expected to be “in the coming days.”

Austin announced the most recent US military aid package, worth $400 million, during his visit to Kyiv on 21 October.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later said the US is preparing an additional $800 million package earmarked for drone production in Ukraine.
