Strongest earthquake of 2024 strikes Romania, tremors reach Ukraine

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck Romania, with tremors felt in Moldova and Ukraine’s Odesa Oblast, according to Governor Oleh Kiper.

Odesa Oblast Governor Oleh Kiper said that the earthquake reached an estimated 2-4 points on the intensity scale in southern Odesa Oblast, with tremors also felt in other districts of the oblast.

According to Kiper, the earthquake didn’t cause any damage.

The Romanian Institute for Earth Physics characterized the earthquake as the “strongest” since the beginning of 2024, with tremors originating at a depth of 140 kilometers.

According to Digi24, the earthquake was felt by residents of Bucharest, as well as in neighboring countries including Bulgaria, Moldova, and Ukraine. The tremors reached as far as Odesa, located approximately 340 kilometers from the epicenter.
