Budanov: Russia set to launch Donbas offensive ahead of summer

Ukraine expects Russia to intensify offensive operations in late spring-early summer, particularly near the occupied city of Donetsk, head of Ukraine’s Military Intelligence Kyrylo Budanov told ARD.

Earlier, President Zelenskyy made the same statement, predicting that in June, Russia will announce the additional mobilization of 300,000 troops.

“They [Russian] will advance slightly towards Chasiv Yar. They will move towards the city of Pokrovsk, the strategic direction of Pokrovsk,” Budanov said.

He described the current front situation as difficult but under control.

Unlike some experts, Budanov does not rule out a Ukrainian counteroffensive this year, though he deferred details to the General Staff.

Budanov stressed the need for more artillery and ammunition. He noted European countries, on the initiative of the Czech Republic, are procuring shells for Ukraine, but he doesn’t “feel” their impact yet.

Budanov confirmed Ukraine expects delivery of Taurus cruise missiles from Germany, which “would certainly make our lives easier” by striking command centers and other key targets.

Budanov also welcomed the Pope’s Easter proposal to exchange all Russian and Ukrainian prisoners.

“I fully support this. Let’s do it. There is only one thing left: to convince Russia,” he said.

The UAE, not Türkiye, is currently the main mediator for prisoner exchanges, stated Budanov.
