Russia, Iran sign declaration to counter Western sanctions

In a significant move amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions, Russia and Iran have signed a declaration aimed at countering sanctions imposed by the West. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced the agreement following a meeting with his Iranian counterpart in Moscow on 5 December.

“We have signed the declaration on ways and means of countering, mitigating, and compensating for the negative consequences of unilateral coercive measures. This is an important step in increasing the coordination of efforts by members of the international community to overcome illegal sanctions that the US and its allies have substituted for diplomacy,” Lavrov stated.

This declaration underscores strengthening the strategic alignment between Russia and Iran, particularly in the context of escalating pressure from Western nations. This pressure is in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Iran’s provision of Shahed drones and glide bombs to Russia for use in attacks against Ukraine.
