On 22 June, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) adopted a resolution that supports Ukraine’s accession to NATO, blames Russia for ecocide in Ukraine, and calls on the International Olympic Committee to ban athletes from Russia and Belarus from participating in the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris in 2024, a member of the Ukrainian delegation to PACE, member of Ukraine’s parliament, Yevhenia Kravchuk reported, according to Ukrainska Pravda.
The PACE adopted the resolution after 80 PACE members voted for it. The resolution calls on the Council of Europe member states that are members of NATO to support Ukraine’s membership in NATO and support Ukraine’s “peace formula” that calls on Russia to withdraw all of its troops from the entire territory of Ukraine, including annexed Crimea.
The resolution also welcomes the creation of the Database that will register the damage caused to Ukraine by the full-scale Russian invasion.
In the document, the PACE condemned the Kakhovka dam destruction and blamed Russia for the ecocide in Ukraine. Apart from that, the resolution blames Russian leadership for “recklessly” threatening nuclear war and using the occupation of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant for blackmail.
The PACE members also called for further work to establish an international compensation mechanism and a Special Tribunal for the crime of Russian aggression. In its resolution, the PACE stated that the sanctions pressure and international isolation of Russia should be increased.
Finally, the resolution calls for the creation of a public register of companies and individuals working in Russia’s interests and involved in circumventing sanctions.
