According to Ukraine’s Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov, Kyiv’s lightning offensive went much “better than expected,” but Ukraine needs to protect the liberated territory from a possible Russian counterattack.

Russian reinforcements can launch a counterattack on Ukraine’s stretched supply lines, Ukrainian forces can also be surrounded by new Russian troops if they advance too far.
