Dutch party D66 explains why vote “Yes” in upcoming referendum on treaty with Ukraine

The Dutch political party D66 has released a statement explaining their reasons for voting "yes" in the EU-Ukraine association agreement referendum scheduled for 6 April 2016. The party holds 4 out of 26 seats from The Netherlands to the European Parliament.

D66 stands for a strong country and a strong Europe. In order to achieve that we need strong and meaningful cooperation with countries within and outside of Europe. D66 believes in stronger EU-Ukraine cooperation.

Safer outer borders

Cooperation between Europe and Ukraine increases the stability and security of the outer borders of Europe. Political stability in Europe’s border areas is vital to Dutch domestic security. Stable outer borders are easier to monitor and protect. Fruitful cooperation between Europe and Ukraine is essential in order to stand against Putin.

Strong democracy

Cooperation between Europe and Ukraine is important for the Ukrainian people. Solid agreements about the approach to the problem of corruption and the protection of human rights reinforce the Ukrainian democracy. This offers the Ukrainians a chance at a better future. D66 does not believe Ukraine is ready for EU-membership, and is therefor against it.

Free Trade

Improved cooperation between Europe and Ukraine means business opportunities. With a distribution market of 45 million consumers Ukraine can be a interesting trade partner. For this reason the parties involved clearly agreed to reduce bureaucracy and take away trade barriers. Increased trade with Ukraine is beneficial to our economy and offers Dutch entrepreneurs and SMEs.

Don’t let your vote go to waste. Vote for EU-Ukraine cooperation. Vote in favor of the Ukraine-EU Association agreement on the 6th
