Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine regarding another provocation by the Russian side at the Ukrainian-Russian border, May 24, 2014
On May 24, around 4:00, the Ukrainian Border Guard Service at the Dubrovka checkpoint in the Donetsk Oblast recorded another illegal border crossing from the Russian Federation by 5 trucks and 2 passenger cars with armed men. There is every reason to believe that, like the previous breaches at the border with Russia, this provocation occurred with the direct assistance and connivance of the Russian border guards.
Despite repeated demands by Ukraine to the Russian side to stop provocations at the border and also in light of the hypocritical statements by Russian leaders regarding their supposed non-involvement with the terrorist groups in the eastern regions of Ukraine, the Kremlin in practice continues to purposefully implement its scenarios for further destabilization of the situation in our country. The Kremlin’s primary objective is to disrupt the presidential elections in Ukraine, on May 25, through intimidation, hostage-taking, murders of the local population and the prevention of the normal operation of the election commissions.
The infiltration by armed terrorist groups, organized by the Russian government, of Ukrainian territory is nothing other than another act of aggression against our country and Russia’s cynical disregard for the norms and principles of international law. We call on the international community to immediately take all possible measures to stop the aggressor and not allow him to destroy the process of the democratic expression of the will of the Ukrainian people.
