Analysis & Opinion, Russia

Igor Eidman

Igor Eidman

The Russian economy is small relative to that of Europe or the United States. It military is hardly capable of competing with NATO. But “the Kremlin has a secret weapon which no one else in the world has: enormous criminal financial resources” that Vladimir Putin can deploy to promote his goals, according to Igor Eidman.

During the time of Putin’s rule, “trillions of dollars” have flowed out of Russia abroad, a trend that is “not simply a criminal affair” but rather “the story about the struggle for rule in the world” designed to promote the goals of the FSB and its master in the Kremlin, the Russian analyst says.

Eidman doesn’t mention it, but the size of these cash hordes outside of Russia is now so large that some banks and countries are afraid to go after Putin’s holdings because of the enormous profits that they are making from holding or laundering this money.

This “criminal money is the main weapon of the secret war which Putin is conducting against democracy. It is used for buying off Western elites. Financing propaganda, and manipulating public opinion as well as for supporting destructive political forces, organizing hacker attacks, and collecting compromising information and blackmail of influential people.”

“The goal of all this is a sharp strengthening of Putin’s influence in the world, splitting the EU and NATO, destroying the union between Europe and the US, and destabilizing the situation in democratic countries,” Eidman says. “Now, the most important tasks are sparking hysteria about the refugee crisis in the EU and unleashing a new conflict in the Balkans.

Eidman surveys the way Russian money has been used in Montenegro, Bosnia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Poland, Sweden, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Germany, France, Italy, and the US. “In addition,” he says, “the Kremlin also supports ultra-right, separatist and isolationist forces in the UK, Spain, the Netherlands, Greece and other European countries.”

The way in which Moscow is using its illegal cash hordes to destabilize the situation in the former Soviet republics is “particularly dangerous,” Eidman says, and thus requires “a separate discussion.”

In many ways, Eidman suggests, “the situation is like the development of cancer. The tumor (the Putin corporation) is so large that it is impossible to remove without harm to the healthy part of the organism. The infected (the West) is afraid of this and is refusing to have an operation.”

“But if the surgery is put off forever, the tumor will spread to the point that the life of the victim will be at risk. And then those ill from it will simply die.” The West needs to recognize this and to recognize that Putin is using his “dirty money” not only to affect the political systems of Western countries but also their economies.

Moreover, the West needs to recognize something else: Even in those relatively few cases where the Russian money involved is not dirty to begin with – it may have flowed out in completely legal ways – it has been hijacked by the Kremlin and put to criminally dangerous political use.

Consequently, Eidman concludes, “the capital and influence of Russian bureaucrats and oligarchs must be surgically removed from Western society. Otherwise, the metastasizing of Putinism will not stop.”

Close to 40% of commercial real estate in the downtown Vancouver business centre is owned by RuSSians, mostly former KGB agents and their offspring.

      Cripes.

Canada is drenched in dirty RuSSian money. same the US, but Austria, Cyprus and Switzerland are real dirty RuSSian money laundering safe havens.

Yeah but look it what good it has done them.
Canada is one of Ukraine’s most ardent supporters.
They keep playing these games that are not fooling anyone.

          • laker48

And has been since Ukraine gained independence. Poland was the first and Canada the second state, eight hours later, that recognised Ukraine as a sovereign state on the 2d of December 1991. Not too much has changed since.

          • Andrew Chmile

A LOT HAS CHANGED SINCE….. polaks “think” they can CONTROL UKRAINIAN HISTORY & “think” they can divide up Ukraine …. *YOU* do … aka “max Canada” — lying, sneaking, polak scumbag!

Two sadistic Polak trolls Murf and laker “talking sh|t”… meh!!

    • Njordheim

Eat your heart out, you dumb hooked-nose Polak Troll.

  • zorbatheturk

Trillions certainly have flowed out of RuSSia and been laundered abroad. London, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Austria, Cyprus, Spain, USA (esp. NY and FL), Israel, Panama, Cayman Islands, and many more destinations feature in hiding this black ruSSian money. Shell companies, secret bank accounts, real estate, businesses… the list goes on. Putin can easily afford to fund disinformation operations, pay bribes, give handouts to politicians, hire hitmen, whatever. The Putin regime is a very dangerous mafia. If the West loses, Putin wins.

    • laker48

Right! I’m wondering it the Trump administration goes after this money and the criminals laundering it.

The Drumpf organization would be the main target of that investigation

Trump is here to stay. Ukraine has bet on a wrong horse, like it or not.

          • Brent

you may want to catch up on news about Drumpfs former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort and how much he was being paid by one of Putins buddies

          • laker48

I live in Canada, now governed by a lucky sperm idiot, and I’m on the ball. Dogs bark because they can’t bite. Clinton supporters and all the leftist media are too weak to hurt Trump and his policies, as the energy, defence and military sectors, to name these three, stay firmly behind him. He’s smarter than many his opponents have thought.

          • Quartermaster

Manafort was part of the Trump campaign, not his administration. I have serious doubts that anything illegal will be uncovered on Manafort. Trump isn’t going anywhere.

          • laker48

Trump will throw Manafort under the bus, if necessary, in a wink of an eye.

          • Quartermaster

He’s already seen the greasy side of the bus. My understanding is that the Trump gang has little contact with him.

          • Andrew Chmile

Yeah …. he’s like you polaks…. a LIAR & PERFIDIOUS… & a lot of STUPID MISTAKES …. like your “max Canada” account where you wrote of “dividing Ukraine along historic lines…”

            Wrong Ruski MOLE….

          • Quartermaster

          • laker48

I do agree, but Poroshenko and other oligarchs may have a good run for their money from Trump.

          • Quartermaster

Given how the Oligarchs got their wealth, that wouldn’t bother me a bit. The Russian Oligarchs have been allowed to keep theirs only because the toe Putin’s line. Others who did not, lost much, if not all, of their ill gotten gains.

          • Andrew Chmile

Ukraine didn’t place bets on Clinton, you stupid ***LYING*** polak!

In what way has Ukraine “bet on the wrong horse”? Ukraine never tried to sway the outcome of the U.S. election, Russia did!

By the way, Republicans such as John McCain and Lindsay Graham have been long time supporters of Ukraine’s fight to get Russia out of Ukraine. Drumpf, instead was hiring and surrounding himself with pro Russians with close ties to the Kremlin like Paul Manafort, Carter Page, Roger Stone, Michael Flynng and now and Rex Tillerson and Jeff Sessions

          • laker48

Attacking Trump by Ukrainian English-language media or calling him Drumpf by you before and after his election as president doesn’t seem like a wise strategy, does it? Like it or not, the US is the greatest foreign contributor to Ukrainian defence, albeit not as great and the Kyiv kleptocracy would like to see. Keep in mind that Trump is the president of the US, not Ukraine, and his constitutional duty is to look after and defend interests of the US, not Ukraine. If the Ukrainian government manages to convince him that US interests are aligned with Ukrainian ones, Ukraine is the winner. Simple like this. The Ukrainian government had better start quietly negotiating with the US its joining the Normandy group or even expand it by the US and the UK, the co-signatories of the Budapest Memorandum.

So far, Trump hasn’t done anything to hurt Ukraine or its interests, and Rex Tillerson won’t expand cooperation with RuSSia, as ExxonMobil’s Sakhalin operations haven’t been affected so far, while it’s Arctic options are worthless until global crude prices hit $78 per barrel of WTI, what won’t come soon if ever. The reiteration by Trump ad Tillerson of their firm demands that RuSSia return Crimea back to Ukraine and hand over to Ukraine control over its entire border with RuSSia protects Ukrainian oil and gas reserves on these territories, as any attempt by RuSSia to touch them will trigger new US sanctions on the RuSSian oil and gas industry, what RuSSia cannot afford. Just get real!

          • Brent

“Drumpf” is the actual family name. Trump is what his grandfather changed it to. Feel free to look that up!

If DRUMPF is “looking after and defending the U.S. interests”, why is the FBI investigating him and his ties to Russia? Why did his campaign team and his Cabinet include so many pro-Russians? Why has he not said anything bad about Putin and instead lavishes praise on him for being a great leader?

Tillerson or “Wayne Tracker”, who was calling for the end of U.S. sanctions on Russia?

Try to keep up with current news. We get lots of current news in Canada….I agree with your assessment about that sh*t for brains ex part time teacher we have running our country into the ground, but Drumpf is no savior for the U.S.

          • laker48

Like it or not, he’s reduced the US’s long term debt by $100 billion dollars since he was sworn in. He will also cut Germany to size in Europe and Chancellor Merkel is quite uneasy about his intention to attend the NATO Summit in May. As far as Ukraine is concerned, he’s not stupid and can easily see that corruption is well and kicking there, and the oligarchs keep looting the country as they did before the revolution of dignity over three years ago. Those crooks don’t care that the best sons and daughters of Ukraine get killed in Donbas almost everyday, so my criticism keeps building up. Take a look at the performance of the Ukrainian economy since 1991 and compare it to the performance of other former Soviet republics and bloc countries in the same period. http://www.tradingeconomics.com/ukraine/indicators

I, personally, don’t see a quick fix for Ukraine’s problems, even if the war in Donbas is over and the country reclaims control over its whole border with RuSSia. It’s up to the Ukrainians to take charge of their homeland and it’s obvious that nobody will do this for them. I personally don’t care what Trump’s family name really is, as this is immaterial, but I support what he’s so far done. He’s notorious not only for his big mouth, but for his often very swift and brutal actions. I personally don’t like him as a person, but I do like what he’s so far done as the President of the US. He’s good for the US and we’ll have to put up with this. All my US friends like most of what he does and I don’t have a reason for not believing them.

          • Andrew Chmile

laker48 is a polak LIAR & anti-Ukrainian …. used his sneaky “max Canada” account to attack Ukraine & proclaim that “Ukraine should be divided according to historical ethnic lines as per the Treaty of Versailles.

He is a LYING SCUMBAG…. as I have very often told him, besides being a HYPOCRITE.

He wants & dreams of a “Greater Poland” with Ukie — lands, nuclear weapons technology, space, aviation, engineering —- land & people resources — LIKE **BRAINS* — as polaks have a deficit of such & are proven, THROUGHOUT UKR. • zorbatheturk

Should try to go after the Putin mafia via a RICO indictment. Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. However, the racketeering done in ruSSia is business as usual there and any investments in the US will be via an untraceable web of offshore shell companies. Unlike Trump, Putin doesn’t put his name on his real estate. Swiss accounts and the like cannot generally be touched by US law enforcement agencies. Putin has probably committed no crime in the USA. Some of the siloviki are covered by the Magnitsky Act, allowing the Justice Dept to freeze any US assets.

    • laker48

There are also rumours circulating around Canada that some RuSSian NHL hockey players and the companies they own may serve as front persons and businesses for laundering dirty RuSSian money in Canada and the US.

      • Czech Mate

Take Ovechkin, a typical dumb Ivan and a staunch Putlerista. He plays for Washington. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he worked for the regime in more than one capacity including spying. Here’s hoping CIA aint stupid not to look into such leads.

      • Brent

Name 10 Russian hockey players still playing for the 7 Canadian NHL teams. Most Canadian teams have purged themselves of these lazy bums

Markov, Radulov, Zaitsev are the only full timers with some fringe players like Emelin, Soshnikov, Slepushev, Tryamkin and Goldibin so I wouldn’t worry about Russian players controlling Canadian businesses to any large extent

        • laker48

I don’t follow this topic, but Pavel Bure has been entangled in some potentially deadly games with RuSSian mafias and had a few run-ins with RuSSian agents. I simply don’t care anymore.

Having all that loot outside Dwarfstan makes it vulnerable to western actions. The western security agencies- NSA, CIA, MI5/6 etc etc- most probably have a pretty good idea of how much is where. Those assets actually in western countries can be frozen at a moment’s notice should western governments ever choose to do so. Those in tax havens can’t be frozen directly, but I suspect that any transfers to destinations outside those havens probably can be blocked which amounts to the same thing.
Dwarfstan lost a lot of loot a few years ago when the Cypriot banking system almost collapsed. Deposits up to 100,000 Euros per depositor were guaranteed, but much of the excess was wiped out. Most of the money in Cypriot banks was Dwarfstanian, so the losses to Dwarfstan were considerable. I suspect the EU decided on the hard cleansing of the Cypriot banking system rather than propping up the banks at all costs to wipe out some of Dwarfstan’s slush funds.

That’s why the Internet, comprised of right-wing people like the ones on Wikipedia (e.g. BatteryIncluded, Boing! said Zebedee, AGK, Stanistani/Zoloft and Dennis Brown AKA zzuuzz), got these illegal cash hordes to fund their activities.
