How FPV drones saved two Ukrainian POWs: isolate, strike, evacuate

The Morok ("Darkness") assault group of Ukraine's 225th Separate Assault Regiment used FPV drones to rescue two of its soldiers from Russian captivity in southeastern Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia Oblast, the unit reported, as covered by Militarnyi. The operation involved using drones to isolate the captors from the prisoners before striking and eliminating the Russian force.

FPV drones have become Ukraine's most versatile battlefield tool — used for strikes, reconnaissance, and increasingly for complex missions combining fire support with tactical precision to minimize casualties among Ukrainian forces. The Zaporizhzhia operation points to an expanding tactical role for FPV drones beyond direct fire support and shows that, on the modern battlefield, drones can be used not only to capture enemy soldiers but also to rescue POWs.

Captured during a settlement clearing

The two Ukrainian soldiers fell into Russian hands during a clearing operation in a settlement on the Zaporizhzhia front. Adjacent units coordinated with Morok to mount a response. FPV drones gave operators the ability to establish control over the situation from above — first separating the enemy soldiers from the Ukrainian captives, cutting off the captors without endangering the prisoners.

After isolating the Russian position, Ukrainian forces struck and eliminated the enemy. Both soldiers were then evacuated from the combat zone.

"Mutual support is the key"

The group described the sequence directly:

"Thanks to coordination with adjacent units and with the help of FPV drones, it was possible to first isolate the enemy, then eliminate them. The coordinated actions of units, promptness and decisiveness allowed saving our fighters and completing the mission."

Morok added that the operation "once again proves that mutual support and coordination on the battlefield are the key to success and preserving the lives of fellow soldiers."

Militarnyi quoted the group's broader assessment:

"This case demonstrates the effectiveness of FPV drones in performing complex tactical tasks, in particular during the liberation of prisoners."

The same regiment recently captured six Russian occupiers in a separate operation in the same direction.
