The United Nations Security Council will hold a meeting on Monday at Ukraine’s request to address Russia’s ongoing missile attacks against Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure, according to Ukrinform.
Ukraine’s permanent representative to the UN, Andriy Melnyk, requested the meeting after a sharp escalation in Russia’s missile and drone strikes.
The session will be chaired by US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, as the United States holds the Security Council presidency for March.
Melnyk: Russia has intensified systematic strikes on civilians since January
“Since the start of 2026, Russia has significantly intensified its deliberate and systematic rocket terror against civilians, targeting critical infrastructure, hospitals, and schools across Ukraine,” Melnyk told Ukrinform.
He noted that in a single attack on March 14, Russian forces launched 68 missiles and 430 drones at Kyiv, Kharkiv, Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, and Mykolaiv regions.
Melnyk highlighted the human cost of these strikes, reporting that coordinated attacks last week alone involved 1,770 strike drones, over 1,530 guided bombs, and 86 missiles, resulting in at least 24 civilian deaths and 183 injuries.
He described the assaults as indiscriminate attacks on civilians that constitute violations of the UN Charter and international humanitarian law, labeling them war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Ukraine: Russia is trying to destroy Ukrainian statehood, not negotiate
Ukraine has emphasized that Russia shows no willingness to negotiate a genuine peace, instead intensifying a campaign aimed at destroying Ukrainian statehood. “This is why I requested the Security Council convene to review this extremely serious issue as soon as possible,” Melnyk said, urging swift action from the Council.
The meeting will include briefings from UN officials, including Deputy Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo and a representative from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
It is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time (9:00 p.m. Kyiv time), Ukrinform reported.
Ukraine warns Russia's Iran support threatens global energy security
Melnyk stressed that even amid growing tensions in Iran and the Middle East, the Russian war against Ukraine must remain a priority.
He noted that Moscow’s military support to Iran further destabilizes the Persian Gulf region and threatens global energy security.
The Security Council session is the latest in Ukraine’s efforts to bring international attention to Russia’s intensified missile and drone campaign.
