The Russian forces have destroyed approximately 80% of critical infrastructure in Pokrovsk, a key logistics hub in eastern Ukraine, according to a local official as per Reuters.
In recent months, Russian forces have been steadily advancing in Pokrovsk direction, Donetsk Oblast, aiming to push westward and strain Ukrainian defenses. Pokrovsk’s strategic importance lies in its location at the intersection of roads and a railway, making it a crucial point for both military and civilian operations in Donetsk Oblast.
The looming autumn mud season also poses further challenges for both sides as movement becomes difficult, impacting the ongoing offensives.
Serhiy Dobriak, head of Pokrovsk’s military administration, stated that Russian troops are now about 7 kilometers (4 miles) from the town.
“The enemy is leaving us without power, without water, without gas. Prepares us for the winter, so to say,” Dobriak described the situation to Reuters.
The population of Pokrovsk has significantly decreased, with only 13,050 residents remaining compared to over 48,000 just six weeks ago. Ukrainian officials continue to implement an evacuation plan that has been ongoing for several weeks.
The town faced continued attacks on Thursday, with nine glide bombs launched, resulting in four injuries and further damage to infrastructure. Dobriak reported that the daily attacks specifically target energy facilities and other vital infrastructure.
The extent of the damage has left almost half of Pokrovsk, ten nearby villages, and one smaller town without power. Russia denies targeting civilian infrastructure.
On 2 October, the Ukrainian 72nd Mechanized Brigade strategically retreated from Vuhledar in Donetsk Oblast to minimize losses under heavy Russian pressure on the flanks.
Russian forces had been attempting to capture Vuhledar for two years because the city is beneficial for them. It is situated on high ground and contains numerous multi-story buildings. These conditions are advantageous for conducting reconnaissance and provide a better vantage point for firing on the enemy.
