The Ukrainian Navy reported a missile strike on Russian ammunition depots near the occupied city of Mariupol.
According to a statement released on 17 September, Ukrainian naval units targeted and destroyed Russian ammunition storage facilities in the vicinity of the occupied port city.
Mariupol has been under Russian control since May 2022. The city endured a prolonged siege from February to May 2022, which left thousands dead.
The destruction of ammunition depots is important as it disrupts the Russian logistics chain, potentially forcing them to reallocate resources and delay or abandon planned offensives while they attempt to replenish lost stockpiles.
The operation was carried out based on intelligence identifying significant ammunition stockpiles in the area.
The strike destroyed both storage infrastructure and “tons of ammunition” that the Russian occupying forces had accumulated for use in Ukraine, the Navy claims. The statement emphasizes the strategic importance of the target, describing it as “important ammunition depots” that were discovered by reconnaissance.
The Navy’s report suggests that Ukrainian forces retain the capability to strike deep behind Russian lines, potentially disrupting Russian logistics and supply chains in occupied territories.
However, Eurimaidan Press can not independently verify the extent of damage caused by the strike was not immediately available.
