Lithuania to allocate over $ 5 mn to rebuild destroyed schools and kindergartens in Ukraine

Lithuania will allocate $5,4 million to restore schools and kindergartens destroyed during the war in Ukraine, the Lithuanian Minister of Finance, Gintare Skeiste, said during her visit to Ukraine. Over 3,500 educational institutions have suffered some kind of damage, and almost 400 have been completely destroyed due to Russian aggression in Ukraine. Ukraine needs about $14 billion to restore educational infrastructure, Deputy Minister of Education and Science Yevhen Kudriavets said. The Lithuanian $5,4 million will support the reconstruction and adaptation of schools and kindergartens with shelters, according to the Lithuanian outlet LRT. The first $4.6 billion from the Fund for Ukraine will be disbursed to Ukraine in March, according to Gintare Skeiste. During her visit to Kyiv, the Lithuanian Minister of Finance also discussed with her Ukrainian counterpart, Serhii Marchenko, and Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine, Andrii Pyshny, the economic situation, and public finances in Ukraine, as well as its readiness to implement reforms in line with its commitments to the EU. During the meetings, the parties also discussed ways to use the frozen assets of the Russian Central Bank for the needs of Ukraine. The Lithuanian Minister also visited a kindergarten in Irpin, which was restored with Lithuanian funding. According to the World Bank, the estimated total reconstruction and recovery costs for Ukraine over the next decade have risen to $486 billion, and the least recovery cost in 2024 will require $ 15 billion.
