Canada imposes sanctions on Russian military-industrial, cultural sectors

Canada has announced additional sanctions against Russia in response to its ongoing aggression against Ukraine. The sanctions target individuals and entities connected to Russia’s military-industrial complex and the cultural and education sectors. The sanctions target a total of 39 individuals and 25 organizations.

In the military-industrial complex, the sanctions focus on private military companies and volunteer organizations supporting Russia’s war of aggression.

  • This includes figures from the Wagner Group, such as Ivan Maslov, who played a role in the massacre of civilians in Mali.
  • Canada is also targeting leaders in Russia’s nuclear sector to increase pressure on the Kremlin’s actions in Ukraine, particularly regarding the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
  • Additionally, individuals involved in the development, manufacturing, and supply chain of the Orlan-10 unmanned aerial vehicle are also subject to sanctions.

The sanctions extend to the cultural sector, addressing Kremlin-led efforts to Russify Ukraine’s culture. Russian celebrities, singers, actors, filmmakers, and officials in the cultural sector, including the Minister of Culture and museum leaders, are among those targeted. These measures respond to the use of Russian celebrities to promote Russia’s military operations in Ukraine through music, concerts, and other events.

Since 2014, Canada has implemented sanctions against more than 2,600 individuals and entities involved in violating Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
