Russian forces struck a market in Nikopol, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, with a drone at around 9:50 am on 4 April, killing five people and injuring 19 others, the Office of the Prosecutor General reports. Trading premises were damaged in the attack.

The strike came after a mass overnight drone assault. Ukraine's Air Force says Russian forces launched 286 drones — about 200 of them Shaheds — against the country on the night of 3–4 April. According to the military, 260 were shot down or suppressed across northern, southern, eastern, and central Ukraine. Eleven strike drones hit targets at ten locations; debris fell at six more. As of the morning report, around 20 enemy drones remained airborne and the attack was ongoing.

During the same night, Russian forces struck a residential area in central Sumy, with 11 casualties reported.

The day before

The Nikopol market strike follows a deadly 3 April across eastern and southern Ukraine. Russian attacks killed seven people and wounded 35 civilians in Donetsk and Kherson oblasts alone that day, according to regional military administrations.

In Kramatorsk, Donetsk Oblast, six residents were killed and ten more injured in a single day. In Kherson Oblast, one person died and 25 were wounded. Russian forces targeted critical and social infrastructure, residential quarters — damaging seven apartment buildings and ten private homes — as well as an administrative building, a church, a gas pipeline, a minibus, and private vehicles, the Kherson regional administration reports.

Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, which includes Nikopol, was also struck more than 20 times on 3 April with drones, artillery, and aviation bombs across two districts, according to regional head Oleksandr Hanzha. Three people were wounded, including a five-month-old infant and a six-year-old boy.

"In the Nikopol district — the district center, Pokrovska, Chervonohryhorivska, Myrivska hromadas. Fires broke out. Private homes, infrastructure, and a fire truck were damaged," Hanzha said. "Three people were injured: a 5-month-old and a 6-year-old boy and a 41-year-old woman. All are receiving outpatient treatment."

In Synelnykivsky district, Russian strikes hit Vasylivska, Mykolaivska, Pokrovska, Dubovykivska, and Petropavlivska hromadas, damaging infrastructure and an administrative building.
