In March, Ukraine’s Armed Forces have destroyed a Russian Ka-52 attack helicopter using an FPV drone, the first known case of an attack helicopter being taken down this way.

Ukraine could see drones specialized in destroying helicopters in the foreseeable future, Oleh Katkov, chief editor of Defense Express, told Radio NV. 

In March 2026, the Armed Forces of Ukraine successfully shot down a Russian Ka-52 helicopter using an FPV drone. It was the first known case of an attack helicopter being destroyed this way.

Additional drones from the 414th Brigade, known as “Madiar's Birds", were then deployed to the crash site, where the crew attempted to evacuate. Both Russian pilots were killed in follow-up strikes.

FPV drones versus deadly rotors: the science and the danger

Katkov explains that such drones could be adapted for this task, taking into account the warhead's weight, flight range, and the ability to wait for a target on the ground.

They could ambush helicopters, being specifically designed to handle rotor speeds and the aerodynamic effects of helicopter blades.

“When an FPV drone approaches a helicopter, it is heavily affected by the airflow generated by the rapidly spinning blades. This creates very strong air currents that disrupt the drone’s stability, generate turbulence, and more,” Katkov says.

Unprecedented chase: drones versus helicopters, who will survive

If Ukrainian developers manage to solve these challenges and create such drones, it could force Russia to limit the use of its attack helicopters in areas where these UAVs become effective.

“And then the race will begin. We will expand the range of our anti-helicopter drones, and Russia will try to find ways to keep theirs relevant. So far, this scenario seems likely,” the analyst adds. 

The incident underscores how rapidly evolving drone tactics are reshaping the battlefield, allowing relatively low-cost systems to neutralize advanced aircraft and disrupt Russian assault operations near the front line.

Earlier, a Ukrainian remotely-operated ground combat robot held a frontline position for 45 consecutive days, suppressing every Russian attempt to break through without a single friendly casualty.

The unit released a video showing how the unmanned system operates in a tree line, sustaining machine gun fire on enemy forces. The exact location was not revealed, but the brigade is known to operate in eastern Kharkiv Oblast.
