Julia Klöckner, President of the German Bundestag, arrived in Kyiv on her first visit to Ukraine since taking office, according to Verkhovna Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk.
Stefanchuk, who met Klöckner at the railway station, called the visit "a clear political signal of solidarity with Ukraine and support at the highest parliamentary level." He added: "At a time when Russia continues its war against our state, the presence of the leadership of the German parliament in Kyiv carries particular weight."
Klöckner, a member of the Christian Democratic Union, has held the position of Bundestag President for nearly a year. Her tenure has already produced institutional changes within the parliament: under her leadership, long-standing Bundestag rules on the presence of children in the chamber were revised, allowing a sitting member to address the parliament while holding her newborn — a first in the institution's history.
Klöckner has also used her platform to open debate on banning the purchase of sexual services under the so-called Nordic model, which targets clients rather than sex workers
