Russia is preparing a spring offensive in Donetsk, Zelenskyy warns after frontline visit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the country’s eastern Donetsk Oblast on Friday, meeting with several brigades defending the frontlines and praising their efforts.

Zelenskyy warned that Russian forces are preparing a spring offensive in the oblast, emphasizing the importance of strong positions, adequate supplies, and coordinated defense.

He said Ukrainian defenders are holding the line with dignity and that their efforts strengthen both the country and its diplomatic position.

Awards, operational needs, and promises to the brigades

During his visit, he awarded service members with state honors for bravery and distinguished service, including orders for courage and leadership. He also discussed operational needs and promised that the military would address issues raised by the brigades.

“The Russians are not abandoning the war, and here, in the Donetsk region, they are preparing an offensive for the spring,” Zelenskyy said. “Our warriors are holding their ground, and this is how our country, our diplomacy, and our people will hold strong as well.”

Zelenskyy concluded by reaffirming the fight against Russian aggression. “Evil must be stopped. Ukrainians here in Donbas are doing exactly that.”

A decade of occupation, a war of attrition

Russian forces initially occupied a large part of Donetsk Oblast in 2014 and expanded their control to most of the region after the full-scale invasion in 2022.

Since then, however, they have struggled to make major gains on the ground despite repeated offensives and heavy investment in troops and equipment, with Ukrainian resistance and fortified positions limiting further advances.
