Fragments of a Russian “Geran-2” drone have been found in Dubai following Iranian drone attacks. Moscow uses these same drones against Ukrainian civilians. Drone debris has been discovered near the Jebel Ali port, Ukrainian journalist Serhii Bratchuk says.
The discovery of drones indicates deep military cooperation between Moscow and Tehran. Since 2022, Russia has used more than 57,000 Iranian-made Shahed attack drones against Ukraine. These drones have been used against people, cities, and Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
“Was this a chance to get hit by your own drone?”
On the Telegram channel “Russians in the UAE", one user wrote ironically, “So it turns out there was a chance to get hit by your own drone? Funny, of course.”
This reaction contrasts sharply with the reality for Ukrainian cities, which regularly endure attacks by Shahed/“Geran”-type drones.
In recent days, the UAE’s air defense systems have intercepted a large-scale Iranian attack, shooting down hundreds of drones and missiles.
At the same time, some debris fell in Dubai, causing property damage. According to NDTV World, the city loses about $1 million per minute due to airport downtime caused by the security situation.
Understanding the Russia–Iran alliance
In 2025, Russia and Iran signed a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement, which provides for strengthening defense cooperation, intelligence sharing, development of transport infrastructure, and coordination within the framework of the International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC).
The document also includes provisions preventing either party’s territory from being used by third countries to threaten the partner’s security.
Secret €500 million deal and “Verba” systems
According to the Financial Times, in 2026, Russia concluded a confidential €500 million deal with Iran to supply thousands of modern portable missile systems as part of a major program to restore Iran’s air defense system following the war with Israel.
The deal involved the delivery of 500 portable Verba launchers and 2,500 9M336 missiles over three years. “Verba” is one of Russia’s most advanced portable air defense systems, equipped with infrared guidance, capable of intercepting cruise missiles, low-flying aircraft, and drones.
