Sweden is preparing “one of its largest” security assistance packages for Ukraine, focused on air defense, radar systems, electronic warfare, and drones, Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said on Sunday.
The package comes as Russia continues large-scale missile, drone, and guided bomb attacks on Ukrainian cities and front-line regions. According to the ministry, the assistance is intended to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense, radar, and electronic warfare capabilities amid these ongoing threats.
Saab systems and deep-strike drones included
Ukraine’s Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov discussed the package during talks with Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson. The aid will include air defense systems and radars produced by Saab, as well as expanded support for Ukraine’s defense industry.
“The Swedish side is preparing a large-scale assistance package,” the Defense Ministry said, adding that it will include “air defense systems and radars, electronic warfare capabilities, and drones, including deep-strike systems.” Deep-strike drones allow Ukraine to hit military targets inside Russia, far from the front lines.
Strengthening ballistic missile defense
Fedorov thanked Sweden for its consistent support and for new investments in Ukraine’s defense sector. “We are grateful to Sweden for its principled position and concrete steps to strengthen Ukraine’s defense,” he said, according to the ministry.
A key focus of the talks was strengthening Ukraine’s air defense against ballistic threats. The sides discussed additional contributions to the PURL initiative, aimed at supplying Ukrainian forces with critically needed weapons, including systems to counter ballistic missiles.
Joint defense innovation and production
The ministers also addressed cooperation on defense innovation. Ukraine’s Brave1 defense tech cluster is considering launching a joint Brave-Sweden program that would allow co-financed grants for defense companies and testing of new technologies directly at the front.
In addition, the sides are working to accelerate the launch of joint defense technology production, including the manufacturing of Ukrainian security solutions in Sweden.
Gripen jets and Meteor missiles discussed
The ministers also discussed aviation support, including the possible supply of Gripen fighter jets and the transfer of Meteor missiles. The missiles are seen by Ukraine as “key tools for countering aircraft that carry guided aerial bombs,” the ministry said.
