At its first session of the year, the Bundesrat — Germany's upper house of parliament — adopted a resolution committing to continued support for Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression, reports ntv.
The resolution states that supporting Ukraine represents "a shared responsibility of the federal government, the states, and municipalities" and requires coordinated cooperation across all levels of government.
According to the document, support for Ukraine must be "continued and, where necessary, intensified."
The Bundesrat called on Russia to "immediately cease all attacks and withdraw troops from the entire territory of Ukraine."
The resolution also condemns in the strongest terms ongoing attacks on Ukrainian civilians and civilian infrastructure, as well as war crimes, human rights violations, and other serious breaches of international humanitarian law.
Earlier, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius urged allies to step up air defense support for Ukraine, noting that Berlin has limited capacity remaining for such assistance.
Against the backdrop of escalating Russian bombardment, Franziska Brantner, co-chair of Germany's opposition Green Party, has called on the government to strengthen Ukraine's air defense and transfer long-range Taurus missiles to Kyiv.
Meanwhile, US Republican Congressman Don Bacon appealed to the American administration to provide Ukraine with long-range weapons and air defense systems in response to Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.
