Three dead, 1,500 without power after Russian drone hits Zaporizhzhia residential area

A Russian drone strike on a residential area of Zaporizhzhia killed three people and left nearly 1,500 residents without electricity, local authorities reported.

The Zaporizhzhia Regional State Administration said the attack on 20 January set multiple cars on fire. One person trapped in a vehicle could not be rescued.

Among the dead are a 48-year-old man and his 43-year-old wife, as well as their 57-year-old neighbor.

At least six homes were damaged, and three vehicles were destroyed in the attack.

Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov said restoration of power to the nearly 1,500 affected households will begin as soon as security conditions allow.

The strike comes amid a series of Russian attacks targeting Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, adding to the strain on local energy and emergency services.

Zaporizhzhia, a major industrial and administrative center in southeastern Ukraine, has faced frequent Russian attacks since the full-scale invasion began in 2022. The city’s residents have endured repeated disruptions to electricity, water, and other essential services, while local authorities work to maintain essential infrastructure and emergency response capabilities.
