“No compromises found yet”: Five-hour meeting between Putin and Trump’s envoys in Moscow ends with no breakthrough

The war will continue. On 2 December, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff discussed potential territorial concessions from Ukraine during a meeting in Moscow. The Kremlin reports that "no compromises have been found yet," TASS reports.

This indicates that the war and Russia’s air terror against civilians will continue. It is crucial for Ukraine to maintain its defense capabilities, preserve the unity of its allies, and not interpret Kremlin statements on "readiness for negotiations" as a genuine prospect for peace.

No compromise yet: talks focus on broad principles, not agreements

The meeting between Putin and Witkoff lasted five hours, but no peace agreement was reached. Kremlin aide Dmitry Ushakov, who attended the talks, said that several draft ideas for resolving the war in Ukraine were discussed, as per RIA Novosti.

“There is currently no compromise plan for Ukraine. Some American proposals are acceptable to Russia, others are not,” he stated.

According to him, the discussions were not about specific formulations or decisions, but rather about the overall substance of the matter. He noted that the sides see “great potential for cooperation," but gave no other details on what exactly this means.

No Putin-Trump summit scheduled

The Kremlin meeting also covered the prospects for economic cooperation between Russia and the US, Ushakov noted.

He added that a meeting between Putin and US President Donald Trump is not currently planned. The possibility depends on work at the level of aides and foreign ministries. The timing of a potential Putin-Trump meeting will also depend on progress in resolving the war.

Following the Kremlin talks, Witkoff returned to the US Embassy in Moscow.
