Kraków police bust suspected Russian hacker targeting Polish firms’ data systems

Poland reported that a Russian citizen has been arrested in Kraków on suspicion of hacking into the IT systems of Polish companies Authorities say the man bypassed security protections to access internal databases, prompting his temporary detention.

This comes amid the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war, as Moscow also conducts military provocations in European airspace and relentlessly carries out cyberattacks against Ukraine and its allies.

Suspect accused of breaching company defenses

Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński announced the arrest on 27 November via his official account on X. He stated that officers from Poland’s Central Bureau for Combating Cybercrime detained the Russian national in Kraków, southern Poland, over serious offenses tied to unauthorized access to Polish corporate telecommunication systems.

The man allegedly broke through company cyber protections in order to obtain entry to confidential databases.

The suspect is now under temporary arrest while investigations continue. Polish law enforcement has not released the individual’s name or the specific companies targeted, but described the crimes as serious and focused on unauthorized IT interference.

Ongoing threat of sabotage amid heightened tensions

Poland, along with other European countries, has intensified surveillance of potential Russian cyberattacks and sabotage efforts since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. These efforts have included monitoring suspected arson attacks and strikes on critical infrastructure across the region. Moscow has repeatedly denied involvement in such operations and accused Poland of what it calls “Russophobia”.
