Ukraine forms dedicated drone command as Russia fires 6,900 drones in single month

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi said via Telegram that Russia deployed almost 6,900 drones against Ukraine in September, with over 3,600 of them being Shahed-type UAVs.

"The Russian army is constantly changing tactics, intensifying strikes on frontline areas, border regions, and critical infrastructure facilities," Syrskyi added.

To counter the escalating drone threat, Ukrainian military leadership has decided to strengthen air defense capabilities. The measures include increasing crews operating interceptor drones, expanding existing units, and training new specialists.

Ukraine is establishing a separate Unmanned Systems Air Defense Command within the Air Force structure. Syrskyi had previously announced the creation of this new branch of the military dedicated to anti-drone operations.

The command will utilize interceptor drones of both domestic and foreign production. According to Syrskyi's earlier statements, these interceptors destroy Shahed drones with approximately 70% effectiveness. Several Ukrainian companies are currently manufacturing such interceptors, with units and command structures being formed for their deployment.

Beyond drone interceptors, the Armed Forces are employing attack helicopters and light-engine aircraft to eliminate enemy drones at higher altitudes.

Syrskyi emphasized the need to "accelerate the development and introduction of new types of interceptors into the troops."
