Netherlands, Nordics lead $1 billion monthly push to arm Ukraine with US weapons via PURL

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that several packages of American weapons for Ukraine have already been financed through NATO's Priority Urgent Requirement List (PURL) initiative, with additional packages currently under negotiation.

"The PURL initiative is a very valuable NATO mechanism that transforms allied support into tangible capabilities for Ukraine. It gives us the opportunity to purchase defense weapons that are needed right now to save lives, including Patriot systems and other key American equipment, and it is already delivering real results," Zelenskyy wrote.

Since August, Ukraine's partners have financed the following weapons packages, according to the President.

The Netherlands contributed $578 million for the first package. Denmark, Norway, and Sweden jointly provided $495 million for the second package.

Germany has announced its intention to finance a third package worth $500 million, while Canada plans to contribute $500 million for a fourth package.

The fifth and sixth packages are currently being coordinated with the American side, Zelenskyy said. Belgium, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Iceland, and Luxembourg have already declared their readiness to contribute to the upcoming fifth package.

"Our goal is to secure $1 billion per month within the initiative to fully realize its potential. We are grateful to every partner for such important contributions. Together we are strengthening our defense and bringing closer a just and lasting peace," Zelenskyy said.

The President previously said that the first two PURL aid packages include missiles for Patriot air defense systems and HIMARS rocket systems.

The PURL initiative becam operational in summer 2025. It was created jointly by NATO and the United States and is aimed at rapid delivery of American weapons financed by Ukraine's partners.
