ISW: Russians make multiple advances in Kursk, Donetsk while Ukraine regains ground in Kharkiv oblast

According to the November 4 assessment from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russian forces have achieved new territorial gains across multiple regions amid intensified fighting along the frontlines, with their primary efforts concentrated in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk Oblast. Ukraine reclaimed ground north of Kharkiv, and near Donetsk Oblast’s Toretsk.

For weeks, Russia has made incremental gains amid heavy losses from repeated frontal assaults. On 30 October, President Zelenskyy reported Russian forces outnumber Ukrainian troops 8:1 in some areas, forcing tactical retreats. On 31 October, OSINT project DeepState claimed Russia captured Selydove, but Ukraine’s General Staff reported repelled assaults.

ISW reported Russian advances in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, particularly west of the Ukrainian salient. Geolocated footage published the same day revealed Ukrainian strikes on Russian forces near Novy Put, a village southwest of Glushkovo in Kursk Oblast, indicating Russian progress in the area.
