EU sends thermal imaging systems to Ukrainian border guards

The State Border Guard Service has reported that Ukrainian border guards have received mobile thermal imaging systems from the EU.

The transfer of the systems took place as part of the “EU Support to Strengthening Integrated Border Management Resilience in Ukraine (EU4IBM-Resilience)” project.

A thermal imaging system is a device that helps detect heat emissions from various objects, creatures, and people that are invisible to the human eye. With the help of these devices, military personnel can “see” the enemy in poor visibility conditions and combat saboteurs in populated areas.

The event was attended by the First Deputy Head of the State Border Guard Service, Volodymyr Nikiforenko, and the EU Ambassador to Ukraine, Katarína Mathernová. Representatives from the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), the project’s implementers, were also present at the ceremony.

“It is worth noting that as part of the cooperation established last year, the border guards have already received radios, mobile X-ray scanners, and equipment for the rehabilitation of the Border Guard Service personnel,” the statement said.

Volodymyr Nikiforenko thanked the ambassador and international partners for their strong and consistent support in resisting Russia’s military aggression.

He also expressed gratitude for the long-standing successful cooperation and effective implementation of joint international technical assistance projects.

In turn, the EU ambassador said the bloc supports and is ready to intensify cooperation with Ukraine’s border agency, as well as launch new joint projects and initiatives, as per Militarnyi.

Recently, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine received 42 Iveco EuroCargo trucks and a front loader from the MHP company and the BGV Charitable Fund.
