American businessman Elon Musk, known for the occasional spreading of Russian propaganda narratives, has made a prediction on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that if the war in Ukraine lasts “long enough,” Russia will capture territories up to the Dnipro River, and the city of Odesa. Notably, Musk used Russian versions of the geographical names – the Dnepr and Odesa – which shows that his opinion comes from a Russian source.
“The longer the war goes on, the more territory Russia will gain until they hit the Dnepr, which is tough to overcome. However, if the war lasts long enough, Odesa will fall too,” wrote Musk on X/Twitter.
Musk believes that while there is no chance of Russia taking control of the entire country due to the extreme resistance they would face in western Ukraine, they will undoubtedly acquire more land than they currently hold.
“Whether Ukraine loses all access to the Black Sea or not is, in my view, the real remaining question. I recommend a negotiated settlement before that happens,” further stated Musk.
This is not the first controversial statement Musk has made regarding Ukraine. In 2023, he suggested that Russia should be given a portion of Ukrainian territories to prevent the outbreak of a third world war. Despite this, his Starlink terminals played a crucial role for Ukraine at the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion and continue to provide communication capabilities for Ukrainian military forces.
